Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin predicted chaos at Darlington, weeks before Sunday’s race and during the Goodyear 400 he was in the middle of some of the chaos that happened. The most significant incident of the day involved the No:11 Toyota Camry driver and his ex-teammate Erik Jones.

Early in stage two of the race, Joe Gibbs Racing veteran found himself racing for positions against the Legacy Motor Club driver. He attempted to overtake on turn three via the outside lane, but with the No:43 Camry closing the gap by checking up resulted in a contact that spun out Jimmie Johnson’s driver.

While No:11 car didn’t suffer any major damages, it was enough to ruin his momentum. On the other hand, Jones’ car suffered serious damage. Bubba Wallace, who drive the No:23 Camry for the team co-owned by Hamlin was also a victim of the incident as he also spun out because of the chaos and it ruined the race of the veteran, who qualified P2 for the race.

LMC crew was furious at Denny Hamlin after the incident and were heard calling out the TRD racer on team radio. One crew member accused the JGR racer of always behind the cause behind chaos while another claimed that the veteran racer is mad, he is slower than Erik Jones on the day at Darlington.

Crew Member 1: Typical Denny sh*t!

Crew Member 2: It’s all good. Just mad because we’re faster, and we passed him. It’s alright. We’ll go and pass him again.

We talked after the race, and I assumed it was a mistake, which he said it was. It’s an unfortunate mistake for us. He let me go in [Turns] 1 and 2, and then I went to go run the bottom. He said he just went to run the bottom as well and just cleaned me out.

Erik Jones told Dalton Hopkins of Frontstretch.

Denny Hamlin though was predominantly blame for the incident and that might be the reason why he apologized to his TRD teammate. Jones added that it’s bummer that there day got ruined by the incident, as they had a top-5 worthy car.

He said sorry and it was his bad. It’s all you can do… It’s definitely a bummer and didn’t help us for our day. I think we were probably a top-five car, it just took us all day to get back up there.

Erik Jones added.

The veteran missed out on the opportunity to secure his maiden top-5 or second top-10 finish of the season, that so far has been challenging. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the duo in the coming weeks, in terms of performance.
