Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Martin Truex Jr. came into the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma with the hopes of securing his first win of the season. But fate had other plans for him as he was involved in multiple incidents throughout the race, that ruined his strong run that could’ve yielded him an impressive victory.
Martin Truex Jr. spin himself out earlier in the race while building a strong run and when he recovered was involved in a multi-car pile-up caused by Josh Berry hitting Christopher Bell. He recovered from it and slowly found himself back in the picture with a shot at victory. But on the final corner in the last lap everything went south while he was racing at P2.

Just like defending champion Ryan Blaney at Gateway, The No:19 Toyota Camry ran out of fuel with one lap left and ruined the whole race for him. He dropped down in the pecking while he was trying to finish the race somehow. Truex Jr. finished the race using everything that was left in the cars, listening to the wild cheers of fans, and two tow trucks behind him, scoring a P27.
Last week his teammate Bell suffered the similar fate as his Car had a mechanical issue at the end of the race at Gateway, while having a strong run till then. Truex was the one who pushed the youngster to the finish line with his car, producing a great teammate moment. But this time there wasn’t anyone there to return the favour to him.
Martin Truex Jr. shares his feelings about the Sonoma finish
The future Hall of Famer seemed really disappointed after failing save enough fuel to compete the race. He admitted that the result s**ks as he was close to finishing at P2 behind winner Kyle Larson before running out of fuel. He asserted that till the incident the No;19 has been performing really well.
It’s a shame that we went around the last corner and went from second to wherever we finished. It s**ks, but it was a tough day, and we had a good car. We battled and did a good job. We were going to have a good day, but just one corner short.Martin Truex Jr. said.
The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran would have avoided a lot of pressure about the winless streak and about his future if he had a good day at Sonoma. It would be interesting see how he approaches the coming races amidst the disappointments.
