The three NASCAR Cup Series seasons hasn’t been kind to Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman. Back-to-back injuries in the last four years has killed the No:48 teams’ momentum and since the start of the Next-Gen era they have won just two races, while all three of his teammates have won eight or more races.

Alex Bowman had one of the worst runs of his career in 2022, that saw him finish the season P13 in the table winless and some in the community is calling Rick Hnedrick find a new driver for iconic team. According senior NASCAR journalist Bob Pockraas the new Chase format will help Bowman to get into the playoffs, but it’s unsure whether it will enough to earn him a contract extension.

I think this format probably helps him as far as having the knowledge. He probably will be safe when it comes to the playoffs. Now, is that going to be good enough get an extension? You know, we’ll see.

According to Pockrass the performance of Tyler Reddick with 23XI Racing might have major consequences for Bowman. If the former RCR driver fails to deliver with the No:45 team due to not having good cars, he might decide to move and HMS will be happy to have him. So, the future of the No:48 Chevy driver is not just in his hands.

But it could depend on a guy like Tyler Reddick. Does he want to stay at 23XI? Where does he see that program going? Who is willing to wave potentially a bigger check in front of him? So, it might not totally be in Bowman’s hands.

Bob Pockrass added.

The veteran racer himself seems to know he hasn’t been delivering on the level as he should and being the less popular driver at HMS, he needs to step up his game or look for other opportunities. He recently admitted that 2025 was a big struggle for him and promised that they have made big changes to improve in the 2026 season.

There’s no secret last year was a big struggle for us, and we’ve made an immense amount of changes to try to be better for 2026.

From the race team perspective, there are a lot of factors on the technical side that the team will have to fight with to try to keep things going through some really cold temperatures. I hope we can get it in; it’ll be interesting what shakes out, but whenever they let us back in the race car, I am excited to get going.

The comments over the challenges ahead of the No:48 team at Bowman Gray Stadium seems to be on point and it would be really special for Alex Bowman win at the track the share his name to kick start his redemption season. It would be interesting to see if he can perform good enough to a contract extension in 2027.
