‘It’s just surreal,’ Corey Heim wins his maiden Truck Series Race in his home track Atlanta as KBM dominated the track
Corey Heim wins the Atlanta Truck Series race
Nineteen-year-old Georgian Corey Heim secured his first victory in the NASCAR Truck Series championship and where is better to do that other than your home track as the Atlanta native celebrated his maiden win in his home track itself. He edged Toyota of Ben Rhodes by just 0.173 to the finish to take the checkered flag.
His victory comes in virtue of a last-lap push on the race leader and his fellow 19 years old Georgian Chandler Smith by Corey Heim’s teammate John Hunter Nemechek, which denied Smith a second straight win.
Chandler Smith took the white flag lead on the outside ahead of Kyle Busch Motorsports teammate Heim who was at bottom of the track and after their 3ed teammate, John Nemechek made a move by faking to follow Smith and then only to dart suddenly to the inside to follow Heim and give him a push, which was enough for him to secure the win.
Find out what Corey Heim had to say about a win in his hometown
Corey Heim said it’s surreal and unbelievable to win in Atlanta his home track a track he was familiar with since the age of two. He went on to say his teammate John Hunter Nemechek had an important role to play in his win and denied the notion that there were team orders about letting him win by disturbing his Chandler Smith teammate.
“I can’t believe it. It’s so surreal to be at my home track. I’ve been coming here since I was 2 years old to watch Cup races,” Corey Heim said.
“Yeah, no team orders there. I think as long as one of the KBM trucks won, that’s all that matters. So, you know, the 18 (Smith) did an awesome job defending for most of the race there and the 4 (Nemechek) stuck with me when it mattered the most. So I’ve got to give all the credit to John Hunter Nemechek for helping me out there. It’s just surreal. Awesome,” Corey Heim added.
