The 2024 NASCAR season saw Kyle Larson attempting the iconic Double Duty, with the support from Rick Hendrick, who sponsored his Indy 500 entry with McLaren. But the day didn’t go as planned as he missed the Coca Cola 600, after a rain delay at Indy delayed his whole race, costing him chance to start the race at Charlotte and eventually the regular season championship.

Despite missing the race event because of non-NASACAR racing activities, the sanctioning body gave the waiver to Kyle Larson causing controversy. But the drama has forced a change in the waiver rules, that would affect a racer if they found themselves in the same position as Larson. Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman doesn’t seem to be a fan of the changes.

The one comment I’ll make about that is, there is a lot of debate over this, right? Last year. Being right there in it the whole time, I flew on the plane with Kyle from Indy to Charlotte. And I personally don’t think they needed to take any further steps and here’s my reason why; I saw the hurt on Kyle Larson’s face and I could feel him letting his team down.

Jeff Gordon said via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

He revealed how he was involved in the double attempt and how sad Larson was when he missed the Coke 600. Gordon doesn’t think the changes were needed, though he understands why NASCAR felt they had to take extra action.

I had the conversations with Rick and the conversations he’s having with NASCAR as well as Chad Knaus and Jeff Andrews. I heard from fans and sponsors, and – if you’ve never owned a team or driven a race car, then I understand why you feel like you need to take extra action.

Obviously, I wish the race day would’ve went differently; that makes the race day less memorable for me, but we’ll get a shot at it this year, and hopefully the weather cooperates and we can get the races in.

The comments from Kyle Larson shows he is taking a rational approach for the 2025 Brickyard mega event attempt. It would be interesting to see how the No:5 HMS racer would perform in the Coke 600 and Indy 500.
