The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season was a nightmare for Hendrick Motorsport veteran Alex Bowman. He started the season as the most consistent driver for HMS alongside Daytona 500 winning teammate William Byron, but he lost his strides as the season progress. He ended the season winless, the fourth winless year of his eight years with the Chevy giants.
What makes it more disappointing is the fact that all three of his teammates, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and William Byron making deep playoffs runs, scoring multiple wins and the No:5 racer securing the championship. Team’s Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon addressed the tough situation and highlighted how the No:48 team winning races is important for the team as it represent the seven championship Jimmie Johnson won for them.
There’s a lot of pride there for a Hendrick car, but specifically the 48, when you look at the seven championships that have come from that car. We want to keep that going for the company, for the people that worked so hard on that car, as well as for our sponsors.
Jeff Gordon said via Sportscasting.
Further talking the point, he explained the Chevy has always been a major contributor for the success for the team for years, even during the star racers struggles. The combination of Alex Bowman and crew chief Blake Harris has brought in a lot of value to the team with information as well as the race wins, he has secured over the years.
That team has contributed tremendously to the success of this company, to all of our teams. They add a lot of value in what they bring, the information that comes from Blake and his team and Alex.
Jeff Gordon added.
Further talking about the point, the four times Cup Series champion asserted that the No:48 team needs a lot of improvement and one of their major focuses going into the 2026 off-season will be giving the team everything they needs to get out of performance slump they have found themselves in, and become competitive again.
We know there’s things that need to be improved there. It’s a big part of our focus in this off-season. That’s giving Alex and Blake the tools that they need. And making sure we are surrounding them with all the things that can help strengthen their team and button up some of those things.
Jeff Gordon asserted.
Rick Hendrick is showing great signs from Alex Bowman’s team
The Hall of Famer owner of the team, Rick Hendrick, also shared similar thoughts about the veteran driver. He admitted that Bowman has been under a lot of pressure in the 2025 season owing to the performance slump and pointed out that he is seeing great signs of a potential bounce back from the team in the 2026 season.

I think they put a lot of pressure on themselves. They had a good start on the year. There have been some tracks that Alex was our best car. That team is working hard on getting better everywhere. I think they’re showing great signs. But you’re always going to have someone that’s following the rest of the group.
Rick Hendrick said.
The comments from the veteran owner shows he has full confidence about the racer, despite the growing calls from the fans to replace Bowman with a more productive driver. 2026 is going to be a make-or-break year for the racer, as another poor season might force the team to change the driver line-up.
