Seven times NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson marked his return to the stock car scene after two years stint in IndyCar. He joined Legacy Motor Club as a co-owner and has also been making selected entries in the No:84 car. The team has made some drastic changes since Johnson came in, including joining Toyota Racing Development.
The new journey with LMC as a team owner as well as a driver hasn’t been the best for Jimmie Johnson. He admitted at Indy that unlike when he was driving for Hendrick Motorsports, where he knew every race he had a competitive car, at LMC it would take him half the race to realize how good the car for him and what he is supposed to.
This puts him in a situation where he races in marquee events with a load of expectations on his shoulders and with insecurities. But Jimmie Johnson still enjoying the experience as at the end of the day his primary goal is to make his team Legacy Motor Club better.
(At Hendrick), there was such a comfort knowing the car, knowing the track and the smaller details from a driver standpoint. Now, it’s halfway through the race before I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s what I’m supposed to do.’ And there are insecurities that come with that, but where I am on this journey, enjoying marquee events and trying to grow our race team.Jimmie Johnson told IndyStar.
Jimmie Johnson still gets into the race mode aiming to win
The Hall of Famer admitted that despite not having the best cars when he puts on the helmet to race, he feels like he is here to win. But he then has to fight his mind to bring himself back realistic expectations.
I’ve just got to remind myself of the objective. Of course, when I put my helmet on, I go right back into race mode, where, ‘I’m here to win.’ I mean, I’d absolutely love to, but I just need to bring myself back to realistic expectations on what we’re doing.Jimmie Johnson said.
The champion driver is doing everything he can to make his team power house and would be looking forward to get the team back to their glory days when they were Petty Motorsports. It would be interesting to see how much forward Johnon can lead LMC.
