The 2023 NASCAR Cup season marked the return of Jimmie Johnson to stock car racing, after his two-year stint in the IndyCar with Chipp Ganassi Racing, as the owner-driver of Legacy Motor Club. He joined them as a minority owner and ahead of thus season, became the majority owner after bringing in external investment.
Jimmie Johnson was impressive as a leader outside the track, he hasn’t been performing on the lite level on the track driving the No:84 Toyota. best finish was the P3 from the 2025 Daytona 500, while all other finishes were outside the top 25. His form with LMC before last Sunday made many claims his spell is a legacy killer, and the veteran has now responded to it.
I was back on a Cup schedule. I was like, ‘Okay,’ that’s not what I wanted to do. To drive, I wanted the experience to drive for my own team, even though I was a minority owner, I want to experience that.
Jimmie Johnson told Racing Writer’s podcast.
The seven times Cup champion highlighted that his presence on the track helped the team grow and attract more sponsors. He is hopeful that the critics will understand his vision this year despite how tough the first two seasons has been for him as the leader of the No:84 car.
Then also, the benefits of trying to help grow the team, trying to bring sponsors in, there was another reason for it. You know, trying to build something here. Now I think as time goes on people see the bigger vision and maybe it was just tough to see in [20]23 I guess, 24.
Jimmie Johnson added.
Jimmie Johnson revealed the criticism started after his IndyCar move
Talking about the same point, Johnson pointed out that the criticism regarding the legacy started when he was racing in the IndyCar. He pointed out that he moved to the open wheel racing series to complete his childhood dream, and he did enjoy him there, regardless of the comments from the critics.

It started when I went IndyCar racing. And that wasn’t for anyone else but me. I mean, that was my childhood dream, so I don’t feel like I’m ruining my career I feel like it’s something to be proud of. I truly enjoyed that. My second year I ran the full IndyCar schedule and then the five endurance sports car races, and both of those divisions allow testing.
Jimmie Johnson said.
The comments from Jimmie Jhonson shows he understand why some fans are critical of him, but at the same time he isn’t ready to stop racing as it has more positive impact on his team. It would be interesting to see how Johnson is going to evolve as an owner driver of LMC.
