The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season so far has witnessed some wild and egregious moments, with Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar being at the centre of some of these big moments. Last Sunday’s clash with Zane Smith was another notorious moment added to the No:77’s naughty list.

Seven times NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson recently talked about the all the drama involving the youngster on his appearance on the Door Bumper Clear podcast. He highlighted that unlike the current generation of racers; the legends of the sport wouldn’t have put up with the aggressive style.

It’s up to the guys on track to manage it. I mean, our sport is self-regulating, and if we do look at previous generations, guys wouldn’t put up with that ****.

Jimmie Johnson said recently.

The sport has lost the respect factor and self-policing factor that helped to keep young racers from making every race chaotic. Many drivers in the garage have let most of the aggressive moves from Carson Hocevar slide according to Jimmie Johnson. Though he hates it as a team owner, he understands that from an entertainment perspective it isn’t hurting the sport much.

I mean they wouldn’t, and a lot of guys have allowed this to happen and have allowed these situations, and allowed them to continue to develop. So, you know, I’m eating the popcorn and watching. I’m watching because it’s entertaining.

Jimmie Johnson explains the upside and downside to Carson Hocevar’s aggression

In the same conversation earlier, Johnson talked more about Hocevar’s racing style and different generations of drivers react to it. He hates the fact throughout the 2026 season, the No:77 Chevy has been involved in incident that destroys over 10 cars, even though he wants at fault 100% of time. It’s not a stat that majority in the garage is happy with.

It’s tough. I think it’s unfair to place people in different generations. You know that I think we counted up like eight or ten of our cars that he’s torn up this year directly or indirectly. So don’t like that piece of it.

Jimmie Johnson said.

The upside to the young racer getting involved in dramatic moments is the fact that he has been able to develop his brand beyond the stock car racing bubble. He has done more for the sport in-terms of attracting new fans that the likes of Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson, two champion drivers’ whose fame is limited to the motorsport’s community.

But you know, I wear a different hat now and look at the sport, and eyeballs, and I can’t tell how many times I’ve been in places where I don’t expect to hear the NASCAR conversation and I hear Carson’s name. So, there is upside to it.

Jimmie Johnson added.

The comments from the Hall of Famer are on point and shows how the sport needs Hocevar, as well his aggressive antics. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout young driver in the remaining three races of the season and the upcoming years, with a bounty on his back.
