It marked an end of an era when Jimmie Johnson retired from NASCAR in 2020 and he moved to IndyCar for a two-year stint. After an underwhelming open wheel career, he returned to stock car racing as minority owner of Legacy Motor Club, rebranded Petty GMS Racing. He raced for the team part-time, serving as a mentor for the young drivers.

In 2024, the team left Chevy and joined Toyota, starting a new chapter of his career, while also acquiring more shares as well as control of the team. That season Jimmie Johnson made nine starts but couldn’t produce any statement runs. But in 2025 season he produced a solid run at the Daytona 500, scoring P3.

This brought him close to securing 84th win of his career, a goal he has been desperately working towards since his return. According to the veteran, the major challenge he facing at the moment is adjusting with the Next-Gen cars, while also elevating every aspect of his crew. He has a bucket list of opportunities ahead of him and is determined to take full advantage of it.

Running at a high cadence in the Cup Series is really, really difficult, and I had a lot of exposure to that last year running the nine events. The cars are so specific, and the way you drive them, the team support, pit stops, all these different elements are really tough to do on a limited schedule.  But for the right races and the right reasons, that really makes a lot of sense. I’d love to continue to expand and tick more of these bucket list opportunities off my list.

Jimmie Johnson said via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

In the same interview with SiriusXM Radio, he recalled the impressive 2025 Daytona 500 outing and asserted that securing the podium was an impressive result for the team. He admitted that winning the 84th race for the 84 Toyota team is his something he would like to tick in his bucket list. They seems to slowly developing into a team capable of achieving this goal.

That was a very nice day [Daytona]. I hope to have more shots [at that]. We don’t really speak of the podiums in our industry but to finish third and essentially be on the podium was an incredible opportunity. Man, the 84th win, I wanna believe that opportunity is there one way shape or another. To be in the 84 car chasing that 84th win, I really would like to tick that box.

Jimmie Johnson credits his sponsors for the different career ventures since retirement

The support from Carvana, Jimmie Johnson’s sponsors has played a significant role in the Hall of Famer being able to start in different racing series such as LeMans and IndyCar. The 50-year-old is hoping that the support will continue as he works on taking advantage of the Daytona result momentum and making his crew capable of winning elite stock car races.

I’ve found a really nice balance with Carvana and their support to allow me to chase these ideas. I was able to chase IndyCar with them, I was able to go sports car racing with Ally and Hendrick Motorsports, the Le Mans in the G56 vehicle, back in the Cup car, finish third in the Daytona 500 here in 2025 and really just trying to figure out how to do more of that.

The comments from the seven times Cup Series champion seems to be on point, as the No:84 team has a lot of work to do to be competitive. They have a strong driver and the support of Toyota, so they will be Cup race win competitors from the moment they start to execute perfectly.
