Former NASCAR driver Jimmy Spencer is infamous for being someone who isn’t afraid of expressing his opinions, and has always been passionate about it. Recently he appeared on the Door Bumper Clear podcast and gave his assessment on many drivers, including the latest addition made to Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing.

The TRD team, amidst all the chaos over the charter lawsuit, entered the 2025 season with three cars, with Riley Herbst named as the driver for their new entry, alongside the regulars Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick. His debut in the No:35 Toyota has been a massive disappointment and that got the attention of Jimmy Spener.

In his passionate rant about the poor results, Spencer pointed that there is severe drought of talent among the young crop of racer in the top tier, highlighting Riley Herbst as an example of someone who isn’t ready for the top tier. He urged team owners to sign talents from Dirt racing and Flo racing scene.

We need to get the talent from the dirt cars, the Flo racing. You know, I mean, the other thing that I believe in is that that shows the talent. I mean, who’s that Riley Herbst? That poor son of a (expletive) can’t drive nothing.

He then addressed the alleged reasons behind the signing of Herbst to the 23XI Racing team. It was the massive sponsorship that he brought to the team earned him the seat over many other talents. The legend pointed out that the sport is in a place where only the drivers with huge financial backing is getting opportunities.

In today’s world, if you don’t have a tremendous amount of money or a father that’s got a tremendous amount of money, you can’t make it.

Jimmy Spencer asserted.

23XI Racing don’t have no choice but to replace Riley Herbst with Corey Heim in 2026

In the same conversation later, Spencer declared how 23XI hasn’t yet replaced Herbst despite having one of the biggest prodigies of the sport in Corey Heim contracted to them. The sponsorship money is the sole reason for the hesitation.

Evidently, that kid’s [Herbst] bringing a sponsor. Makes a lot of sense, cause that damn Heim can drive a truck.

Jimmy Spencer added.

Corey Heim is on flying form unlike Herbst. The former has won 11 races so far this season and with only the finale left in the Truck Series is the title favorite. At the same time, the latter’s best finish this season is a P14 at Texas and hasn’t shown any promises of producing better results.

Going into the 2026 season, Denny Hamlin and Jordan can’t ignore the young racer, as he will most probably decide to end his contract if they refuse to give him the promotion he deserves. That will be a massive loss for the whole TRD garage as both Ford and Chevy teams wont hessite to pounce on the opportunity sign the racer.
