For the first time since Kurt Busch in 2016, a driver attempted the iconic “The Double” this season, as Kyle Larson got the Indy 500 opportunity with Arrow McLaren. But his attempt didn’t go as planed as speeding penalty cost him a top-10 finish at Brickyard and failed to even race a lap at Coca-Cola 600 as the race was cut short due to rain.

But Kyle Larson left a long-lasting impression at the IndyCar scene, and many expects him to return to attempt “The Double” again next season. But there is another driver who wants to attempt the same in the future and it’s the reigning Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden who won the Crown Jewel race for a second straight year.

I want to, so bad. I want to terribly bad, but that's not just a me thing. If you ask the drivers in the (IndyCar Series) field, they would relish in the opportunity to do the double.
Josef Newgarden told Fox Sports.

Newgarden being part of the Team Penske garage helps him a lot to and a potential ride in the series, but it would be interesting to see if any team would give him a chance as he has no NASCAR oval experience. If it was a road course race, he would’ve a been contender from the get-go as suggested by to Joey Logano, but since it’s oval that chance of him getting a shot is very minimal.

While talking about Larson’s run in the Brickyard race, Josef Newgarden pointed out that he and most of the IndyCar field wants the 2021 Cup champion to attempt “The Double” next-year. He asserted the HMS driver wants to comeback after making the debut.

It's part of (Larson's) pedigree and his history in racing. He's known as the guy that jumps in and out of a lot of cars. It was fitting that he was there, everybody was very enthusiastic and happy Kyle was there and we all want him to come back. Kyle definitely saw the magic of what Indianapolis is all about and I think he wants to be part of it.
Josef Newgarden said.

Many in the NASCAR community also wants Larson to complete what he started as the rain just ruined his attempt this season. It would be interesting to see how things would line-up next-season for a potential Indy 500 ride.
