The NASCAR Cup Series race last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway marked a special moment, as Wood Brother Racing secured their first non-Superspeedway win in a long-time, all credit to Josh Berry. The ex-SHR driver who joined the team at the start of this season earned the win taking advantage of hi skill and composure.

Unlike the usual post-win antics of other race winners, Josh Berry chose to respect the car that got him the maiden win. He got out of the vehicle and kissed it, instead doing a burn out. This got the attention of seven times Cup champion Richard Petty, who alongside Hall of Famer Dale Inman praised the gesture.

Dale Inman: But one thing Berry done that I really liked, he did not do a burnout. He loved that car. He didn’t abuse it.

The legendary racer pointed out that Berry not doing burnout despite his team encouraging him to do so shows character and is impressed with the racer for not showing off. He highlighted how in his days, burn out isn’t a thing as the drivers were always concerned about the next-race and that’s why he respects Berry.

Dale Inman: But the crew was trying to get him to do the burnout. I really like that part.
Richard Petty: I do, too. Yeah. Back then, after winning the race, you don’t need to show off. You just need to start thinking about the next one.

Richard Petty highlights the issue with Next-Gen cars

In the same program on the Petty family YouTube channel, Richard Petty highlighted the issues with the Next-Gen cars how the it affects racing. He pointed out that clean air gives drivers an advantage in the same era and this creates a tough situation for the drivers to progress from the back.

He also highlighted how the less horsepower of the car is affecting racing and making it hard to pass rivals on the track. The Hall of Famer admitted that if a driver lost positions during the race it almost takes a too much time to get back to the top.

These cars are so fickle that clean air gives you a quarter of a second over everybody else. When you’re back there in the back, then all that air created just bogs the cars down. The cars don’t have any horsepower, so they can’t pass each other. If you go out and make a pit stop and you come out seventh or eighth, most likely, that’s where you’re gonna run for a long time.

The track is so challenging because the corners are different. You don’t race the cars [at Darlington], you race the racetrack… I’ve always looked forward to Darlington because, to me, that’s where NASCAR got their big start.

The comment from the HOF shows, the track still has a special place in his heart and it being one of the birthplace of NASCAR also makes it special. It would be interesting to see how the next races at the track are going to playout.
