Trackhouse Racing is one of the rising stars when it comes to NASCAR teams. The squad has some talented drivers in its pool including Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch. However, Trackhouse has even experimented in the field with its Project 91 entry. Now team owner Justin Marks has finally given an update on their plans for this entry.
Project 91 is an experimental entry by Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series. The entry brings a No. 91 Chevrolet in the field. This was first introduced in 2022 when F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen made his NASCAR debut at Watkins Glen. The Finn raced for Project 91 once again the following year, this time at the Circuit of The Americas.
Current Trackhouse Racing driver Shane van Gisbergen also made his NASCAR debut through the No. 91 car, when he won the Chicago Street Race on debut. He soon joined the team full-time. Justin Marks asserted that Project 91 remains a major part of Trackhouse Racing, and something very special to him as well. The entry allowed the team to bag some lucrative sponsorship deals, helping its finances.
I mean, I love Project 91. It’s near and dear to my heart. I think it’s important for the sport. I think it’s obviously been very creative to our business. We’ve been able to do big sponsorship deals that have come through Project 91. Obviously great talent, you know, through Project 91, so it’s an important mechanism in the business.
Justin Marks said, as quoted by @STaranto92 on X.
He teased that there are a few opportunities for this entry in the future. However, currently Trackhouse is focused on its full-time Cup campaign. Marks asserted that first the team will need to get back its championship form, before planning another special entry.
We’ve got a couple of fairly interesting opportunities. With everything that we’re trying to do in the company to get us back into championship form, it’s like No. 85 on the list right now. But it’s not dead. There are conversations happening, there is a strategy around it.
Justin Marks added.

Justin Marks hints at Connor Zilisch factor in Project 91 delay
It is never easy for any NASCAR team to expand its entries. Every additional car not only requires a new driver, but a whole crew and a host of spare parts just to keep the entry going. Currently, Trackhouse Racing is at its limit with three full-time entries, something that makes Project 91 unfeasible for now.

Justin Marks confessed that Project 91 does take a toll on the team’s resources. The Trackhouse Racing owner pointed out that stretching to four cars at Daytona for the entry last time out made it much more difficult for the entire garage. Thus, Marks insisted that with Connor Zilisch already competing for Trackhouse Racing on a few occasions in the Cup Series, the team doesn’t want another No. 91 entry for the time being.
It is a draw on the company. It is tough. I mean, like, Daytona was really, really tough this year to take four cars there, which is why, you know, with the races we’re doing with Connor, like, we just, we wanted to do Daytona and then park it.
Justin Marks stated.
Certainly, Project 91 has been a fan favorite so far. Fans love to see racers from outside the world of NASCAR try their hands at the Cup Series. But it seems that they will now have to wait for sometime before Trackhouse Racing decides to bring back this exciting entry.
