NASCAR has recently faced a lot of flak amid the 23XI-FRM charter lawsuit. Though the sport came to a mutual agreement with the teams, the fans still aren’t fully happy. Amid other problems, ex-NASCAR star Kenny Wallace has shed light on the sport’s massive ticket pricing issue.

Though NASCAR is pulling in more global viewership and audiences around the world, they are still losing its core audience. The major reason for this might be the awkward new regulations that are being introduced to the sport. Among other issues, many fans believe that the charter system and the playoff format were the breaking point for the pinnacle of stock racing.

Now, Kenny Wallace reveals that NASCAR’s growing greed for money in recent years has done more harm than good to the sport. The sport introduced bundled tickets that increased the price for an individual, but allowed them to attend multiple racing events. Though this sounded good at first, the fans who only wanted to watch dirt races or a singular event needed to pay more money than intended.

Kenny Wallace claimed that the one-ticket-for-everything system made the dirt fans apprehensive of attending any event at all. Some tracks mandated purchasing tickets for every event just so they could attend a specific race over the weekend. Wallace argued that this priced out the core fans, and ultimately, a lot of the fans simply gave up on physically attending the races and witnessing them firsthand.

The thing they did wrong was they got greedy. They were so big that they would say, ‘Okay, you’ve got to buy one ticket for everything—you’ve got to show up Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.’ And the dirt racing fans are like, ‘Man, we just want to show up on Sunday.’ Some of the tracks were guilty of saying, ‘No, you’ve got to buy the Truck ticket on Friday, you’ve got to buy the Xfinity ticket on Saturday, and you’ve got to buy the Cup ticket on Sunday,’ and they just priced everybody out. So I’m going to end like this.

Kenny Wallace reveals the other thing NASCAR ‘did wrong’

Certainly, NASCAR will need to work on many aspects if it truly wants to retain its core audiences, while allowing new ones to enter as well. The sport is focusing more on building too many intermediate 1.5-mile tracks, which might not be working in their favor. The pinnacle of stock racing has also been cutting off popular races such as North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and others.

As such, Kenny Wallace recalled that NASCAR enjoyed iconic races such as Charlotte, Rockingham, and many others. However, the sport’s plans to cut down the short-oval races and introduce more intermediate tracks caused their imminent downfall. The recent couple of years have been difficult, especially with the multiple legal lawsuits against the community.

We had Atlanta, we had Rockingham. Charlotte was in there. Back in the late 80s, early 90s, you had the perfect amount of mile-and-a-half tracks. But here’s what they did wrong: they got rid of Rockingham, they got rid of Wilkesboro. They left the tracks that were exciting.

The 2025 season has still been exciting for the fans. Moreover, the sport has put forth its intentions to make changes to the playoff format in the 2026 season. For now, the drivers will enjoy the off-season with the first race just a couple of weeks away. Time will tell if the sport is able to retain its core audiences with the newly implemented changes or not.
