Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson has found himself in a drama that is threatening his chances of winning the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series championship. Last week he attempted the historic double by attempting to race in both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600. But things didn’t go as planned a rain delay ruined the week for him.
Kyle Larson missed the start of the Coke 600 because the he was completing his Indy 500 run, which was delayed due to heavy rain. When he made it to Charlotte Motor Speedway to enter the race replacing Justin Algeir in the No:5 Car, NASCAR decided caution and later call of the race because of heavy rain. He now requires a waiver from the sanctioning body to continue racing for the championship and HMS has requested for it.
Kyle Larson would not talk much about the waiver situation today. He says he is focused on what he is doing this weekend and if he didn't get a waiver, he would still race and try to win the team a championship. pic.twitter.com/KTeeqXVbsC

But the sanctioning body hasn’t reponed to the request yet. Larson was asked about the same ahead of the Cup Series race at Gateway and he had some vague responses. When asked if he is surprised with the decision he responded, “he didn’t know” and when asked if he feels he should get one, he replied “it’s not up to me.”
He was then asked what he would do if NASCAR denies the request for the waiver and makes him ineligible for the championship. Larson responded that he will continue fighting to win the team championship with the No:5 crew.
I would not do anything different. I would try and win a championship.Kyle Larson told Bob Pockrass.
Ex-Cup champion Brad Keselowski advocates for Kyle Larson
2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski was asked about the waiver drama at Gateway. He admitted that he isn’t surprised about the delay as he expected the drama because Larson prioritized Indy 500. But he reckons Larson deserves the waiver because of his contributions while attempting the double and believes the HMS driver will get it.
I’m not surprised that he hasn’t got it yet, but I do think he’ll get it, and that he should get it. There were some rather unique circumstances, and I like the idea of drivers running the double. I think that’s good for our sport, and good for our industry as a whole. Everybody sees the value in that.Brad Keselowski said.
The RFK Racing co-owner is right about the drama. NASCAR knowns it will open a pandora’s box if they give Larson the waiver, hence is discussing all aspects and outcomes of their potential decision before making the final call.
