The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season so far has been a mixed bag for Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson. He started the season strong, securing three victories in the first 12 races of the season, before entering a winless streak that he is yet to get out off. In the last 19 races since his win, he has just three top-5 finishes, an inconsistency never seen before from an HMS driver of his stature.
In his recent interview ahead of the Roval race weekend, the finale race of the R-12, with 50+ points buffer from the cutoff line, Kyle Larson explained the struggles his team faced so far this year. He pointed out that they struggle the most of any crew in the garage, after losing team members, crew swaps as well as multiple personal changes. Now they have overcome that and is in a better spot.
I don’t know what other teams have dealt with, but I don’t know if there’s a team that’s dealt with more than we have with losing a team member, pit crew swaps, different personnel changes. There’s just a lot that we’ve had to overcome, but I feel like we’ve worked really hard and although the results may not show it all the time, I feel like we are building and better than we were…

Further talking about the point, the Hendrick Motorsports star driver pointed out that though they have improved their performance, there is still a lot of catching up to do in order to get back to being the dominant force they were in May 2025. He is confident in his team’s capability and believes they will get be championship favorite soon.
I didn’t have as much hope as I had in May when we were running really, really well. I’m still not quite to there, probably, which our results don’t show that we should either. I’m confident in my team and the people and the group of all the hundreds of men and women at Hendrick Motorsports that have been working really hard. I feel like we are close. It’s just got to all come together.

Kyle Larson explains how Indy 500 might’ve caused his performance slump
The start of the massive slump Kyle Larson experienced coincided with his poor double duty attempt. He raced in both the Indy 500 and Coke 600 this season. Unfortunately, he DNFed at Indy and had a disappointing end to the Charlotte race, after challenging for win earlier.

Talking about it, Kyle Larson admitted that he didn’t have the weekend he envisioned while doing the double. He admitted that though he isn’t sure, the disappointment might have had impact on his performance since.
It didn’t go the way I wanted it to — both the Indy 500 and the Coke 600, but I don’t know [its impact]. I always do a good job of not letting it affect me so I would like to think that it didn’t. But I don’t know if it was coincidence or if it was really a thing. You just never really know.

His results not only dropped in the Cup series, but it took months for to even get back to winnings ways in his sprint car racing ventures which he used to dominate. The only positive he got from the challenging period is the fact thar his crew grew together and become stronger.
We took a dip in our performance on the Cup side. Even my sprint-car stuff there for a few weeks was off a little bit. … It [was] a rough couple, two and a half months. But I think through that all, we’ve become stronger as a team because we’ve been through a lot.
Kyle Larson added.
The comments from the Hendrick Motorsports veteran shows he has gotten his confidence back and he now trust his team to deliver him better cars consistently. It would be interesting to see how the rest of 2025 season starting from Roval this Sunday.
