Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson is one of the most talented racers of his generations. He has dominated races in almost all the tracks in the Cup schedule, other than the Superspeedways. When it comes to the drafting tracks, Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta, he always has been average racer compared to his rivals.
But that doesn’t make Kyle Larson believes the narrative that speedway racing is more about luck than talent. In his recent appearance on the Stacking Pennies podcast of Corey LaJoie, he claimed that the racing style is more than about just luck. He backed his argument by siting the consistent performance of the likes of William Byron, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and more at such tracks.
But there’s more that goes into it than luck, for sure. It’s easy to say that speedway racing comes down to luck, but it’s the same guys that are winning all the time. Penske guys, they’re always up front. William’s always up front. Your [Corey LaJoie] always up front. Ricky’s [Stenhouse Jr.] always up front.
Kyle Larson said via Stacking Pennies podcast.
He admitted that these set of driver has an idea regarding how to challenge for wins on Superspeedways unlike him. He also highlighted how he performs better at Atlanta, compared to other two drafting tracks as he enjoys it more.
You guys have an idea of how to do it, and I don’t know — I just haven’t quite figured it out. But Atlanta is so different. I just enjoy that one.

Kyle Larson shared feelings about Daytona 500 disappointment
In the same podcast, Kyle Larson shared his feelings about another poor start to the season at Daytona 500. He pointed out that he was confident about having a solid race coming in, but the wrong move he made cost him everything.

It’s difficult. You feel like you start to figure it out and then it changes. Like the [Daytona] 500, although we haven’t had good finishes, I’m confident when we go to a superspeedway. We’re up towards the mix of it typically, but Daytona I was just mad afterwards, because every move I made, which wasn’t many moves, was the wrong one.
Kyle Larson added.
The comments from Kyle Larson shows how much the lack of success at the Superspeedway affecting him, despite claiming he doesn’t care about it many times. It would be interesting to see if the good performance will be confident booster he needs in the coming years.
