Hendrick Motorsports’ 2021 Cup Series champion Kyle Larson is arguably the best racer of his generation and there no one as versatile as the veteran in the premier division garage. He has won almost all of the big events of the series including the crown jewel races such as Brickyard 400, Coca Cola 600 and the Southern 500.

But when it comes to most prestigious crown jewel race, the Daytona 500, Kyle Larson is winless despite starting in 12 events and even starting upfront twice. But he couldn’t finish better than P7 in his career and even his son Owen Larson knows his dad got some issues to fix at the Superspeedways. Owen took a sly dig at his father in a recent interview ahead of the Daytona 500 and asserted that the HMS racer needs to try harder to win.

He probably has to try really hard because he’s not good at superspeedways… If he tried harder.

Owen Larson said via Steven Taranto of CBS Sports.

When later asked about who the thinks would be the contenders, he named four drivers including his dad’s teammate. Owen Larson named 2022 Daytona winner Austin Cindric, 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace, 2023 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and the 2024 winner William Byron as the racers who are going to be fast on Sunday.

Austin Cindric is going to be fast. Bubba [Wallace]’s going to be fast. Uh, Ricky [Stenhouse Jr.]’s going to be fast, and, who got second in the first Duel? … Yeah, that guy [William Byron], he’s going to be fast too.

Owen Larson added.

Kyle Larson claims he would be okay to end his career without Daytona 500 win

Though Larson really wants to win the event, he doesn’t think he would be disappointed if he retired without the Daytona 500 trophy. He takes inspiration from Tony Stewart, the most accomplished NASCAR champion with no Daytona 500 wins in his win list, despite having dominated every other race in the schedule.

He’s in every Hall of Fame that he’s deserving of being in. I don’t think it does anything to his career. Obviously, he would love to have it. That’s probably the same as me. Like, I’m not going to lose sleep if I don’t ever win this race, but I still want to win the race and have that ring and that trophy and be a part of the names that have won it.

Kyle Larson said.

The comment from Larson shows he has accepted that fact that he might end up winless at Daytona and seems to be wanting to compensate it with dominant wins at other tracks. It would be interesting to see how he would perform this year at Daytona.
