Coming into the 2025 NASCAR Cup season, Ty Gibbs had one major goal, securing his maiden Cup win and prove he isn’t just a nepotism signing like many of his critics claiming.  The 2022 Xfinity Series champion is in his third year in the stock car racing top division and has remained winless despite having one of the fastest cars in the garage.

The JGR racer, who is the grandson on owner Joe Gibbs alongside being the co-owner of his No:54 car, found himself in muddy waters after he got spun by veteran teammate Denny Hamlin for aggressive blocking at Loudon. Talking about the beef on GoPRNLive, ex-racer Kyle Petty asserted that the youngster would’ve been fired if he wasn’t at JGR and he isn’t taking the team forward as he should.

Doug Rice: If [Ty Gibbs is] racing for any other team with the results he’s had, he doesn’t keep that ride.

Kyle Petty: No, this is his last year. If he’s run three years and hadn’t done any more, but especially coming off his Xfinity record. You are looking at a blue chip player that you thought was going to carry your organization forward, and he’s not taking your organization forward.

Richard Petty’s son then went onto compare the 22-year-old to his teammates, who he was racing aggressively at New Hampshire despite them being in the title fight. New signing Chase Briscoe is already a multi-race winner; Christopher Bell is the most consistent racer the team has, and Denny Hamlin is their leader that can deliver in any tracks.

You’ve hired Chase Briscoe, who’s come in and won races right off the bat. You’ve hired Christopher Bell, who came out of that same thing where he dominated in the Xfinity Series, but he’s stepped up in the Cup Series and is winning races. Denny Hamlin started here and is your mainstay. He’s your horse that’s winning races.

The ex-racer also called out team owner Joe Gibbs for his comments regarding the beef after the race. The NFL Hall of Fame coach wanted the drivers to sort the issue between themselves instead of getting involved. This shouldn’t have been the response from someone who knows how to handle big personalities better than most.

Kyle Petty backs Denny Hamlin’s actions in New Hampshire

While Richard Petty’s son isn’t a big fan of the incident, he understands why the veteran wrecked the youngster as well as his comments calling him out. He pointed out that Ty Gibbs needs to be confronted for his actions and shouldn’t be untouchable, as a racer, and Hamlin might be right guy to do it.

I understand that from Denny. I do understand that because what Denny’s saying is that that is Ty on such a pedestal that everybody’s afraid to tell them that the emperor has no clothes? Okay? Because that’s what you need to tell him.

Kyle Petty said.

The youngster needs to learn some lessons and understand racing better, as his days of dominating Xfinity series as well as getting away with aggressive moves are long gone. The No:54 driver has the talent to secure wins. He just needs the right guidance.

You need to tell him, ‘Learn to drive a race car, and then maybe you’ll win some races.’ Because he is a phenomenal talent. He does have that talent. He just doesn’t put it in the right places at the right time. That’s the problem.

Kyle Petty added.

Denny Hamlin is the best option at JGR to demand better results and behaviour from Gibbs, considering he has raced for the family-owned team successfully for almost two decades. Ty Gibbs needs a reality check and the sooner he gets it, the better the results will be for the whole Toyota team.
