Richard Childress Racing’s star Xfinity Series driver Austin Hill made a lot of enemies on and off the track, last week at Talladega. He won the race under controversial circumstances, making himself the undisputed king of Xfinity Superspeedway races. But he made one move that made ex-racer Jimmy Spencer blast him.
During his victory lap, Austin Hill gave the bird to a set of fans that gave him double birds earlier. An image shared of his doing it went viral on social media string controversy. Ex-racer and team owner Jimmy Spencer, talked about this on his appearance in the Door Bumper Clear podcast. He went on expletive rant and declared Hill will never make it in the sport, by feuding with fans.
I’ve never done that in my life. That’s a stupid son of a (expletive), oh my God. He’ll never make it. I don’t give a damn. I don’t care. You can’t do that. The fans are always right. He should be fined for that.
Jimmy Spencer said via Door Bumper Clear podcast.
In the same conversation, Spencer highlighted how Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin is the only driver that is doing things right with the villain role. He even recalled the time he made the whole of the Connecticut his enemy, after he taunt them for boing him, after beating Bugsy Steven for the win.
I think Denny does it the right way. You’ve just kicked your driver’s ass. See, that was the biggest mistake I ever made. I won at Thompson Speedway, and they were booing me, and I said, “You people are just mad cuz I kicked Bugsy Steven’s a**.”
Jimmy Spencer recalled.
He later regretted the move, as making enemies wasn’t part of Spencer’s plan. Unlike Hanlin he wasn’t able to take advantage of the heat, instead he lost the fame he had in the state and the Mr. Excitement was one of the most hated NASCAR drivers there.
And I was like, “Man, I should not have said that.” And from that day on, those people in Connecticut hated Mr. Excitement. Hated me. You shouldn’t have done that.
Jimmy Spencer added.
Freddie Kraft warned Austin Hill after Jimmy Spencer’s rant
In the same podcast, the co-host of the show and the spotter for Bubba Wallace, Freddie Kraft shared his thoughts on the situation. He pointed out that Hill should work on getting back to the good side of the fans, as he will need that support once he eventually gets an RCR Cup seat and start winning less.

I’ve known this kid a long time. I like him a lot. It’s something that I hope he can get it back on the rails because this is not gonna fly in the Cup Series. He’s not gonna be winning anywhere near this often in the Cup Series I don’t think. He’s inevitably going to get in one of those RCR cars I would assume.
Freddie Kraft said.
The veteran spotter pointed out that he should make sure such incidents will never happen and should not influence fans, that includes young kids, in the wrong way. The comments from the duo seems rational, but a bit stretched at the same time. Austin Hill should work on his relationship with fans before making his eventual full time Cup Series debut with RCR.
