Hendrick Motorsports star driver Kyle Larson had a disappointing weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he raced in both the Cup and Xfinity event. He was involved in a wreck featuring Justin Allgaier in the Xfinity Series and lost the Cup Series race, Brickyard 400, to 23XI Racing star driver Bubba Wallace.
In a late restart in the NASCAR Xfinity Race at Indy on Saturday, Kyle Larson found himself racing behind the No:7 JR Motorsports Chevy of Justin Allgaier, with Conor Zilisch racing beside them. The former made an aggressive move on the championship leader, resulting the cars making contact, and Allgaier losing momentum, after making contact with the wall.
Hall oof Famer Mark Martin addressed the controversial incident, and how Kyle Larson ruined the opportunity of the full-time Xfinity driver. On the Door Bumper Clear podcast, he called out the 2021 Cup Series champion for not taking enough ownership of the incident. He hated to see a driver he is huge fan of acting such a way.
That was not good. Especially under the circumstances, I hated to see that. Honestly, I’m a huge Kyle Larson fan, but I would have d to have seen him take more ownership than he did. He didn’t take enough ownership for me in that accident.
Mark Martin said via Door Bumper Clear podcast.
The incident proved costly for Allgaier, the defending Xfinity Series champion, who was looking to secure a solid finish and extend his regular season championship lead. With four more races left before the playoffs, due to the P36 owing to the incident, Allgaier found himself just 21 points ahead of rival Conor Zilisch, his teammate who has won two races more than him in 2025.
What did Kyle Larson say about the Indy Xfinity drama?
Kyle Larson addressed the dramatic incident, on his post-race media session at Indy. He pointed out that he got lose while racing behind Allgaier, and coming into turn one in a bad angle meant he had no way but to make contact with the JRM Chevy. Larson defended himself highlighting how he tried everything to avoid wrecking the No:7 driver.

He [Allgaier] didn’t really pack air too much on my door there. I just got enough and got just a little bit loose. My angle was bad as I was trying to shortcut the entry, and then I was kind of along for the ride. Tried to bail quickly and just caught his left rear, and wrecked him.
Kyle Larson said after the race.
The veteran racer admitted that he hated the fact that he wrecked a full-time racer and regret his decision making during the crucial moment in the race. He went onto apologize to the veteran second division driver for his mistake, while defending himself asserting that he didn’t have an alternative move to make at that moment.
I hate that. You never want to do that to somebody racing full-time like that, so I wish I could have done some things different. Honestly, I don’t really know what I could have done right there other than to maybe help my angle into (Turn) 2 a little bit. Again, sorry to Justin and the No. 7 team.
Kyle Larson added.
While analysing what Kyle Larson has said about the incident, it’s understandable why Mark Martin has called him out. The veteran racer was more defensive, while admitting his mistake on his pso-race interviews, despite the fact that his actions ruined the race of a championship contender. It would be interesting to see how the No:5 HMS driver is going to respond to the veteran’s criticism.
