We did good in the first two stages — we got a lot of points. I guess we would have had to run second or third to make it through – who knows if we would have been able to. I wish we could have seen if we could have done that. I’m just gutted for my team. We worked so hard this week. We all put in a lot – all season long, and in the last three weeks, just snake bit.
Martin Truex Jr. said via NBC Sports.

The thing that hurt him the most is a pit-speed penalty he got on lap 33 and he never recovered from it with the lack of cautions hurting him. He also admitted that having fast car and opportunity to be upfront only to mess it up hurts and makes him fells for his team, who were doing everything they could to make the cars better.

Can’t do anything right. .09 mph hurts really bad to take the chance away to know if we even could have done it. I don’t know if we could have run second – maybe. We were close to it – all day – but in the end, it doesn’t matter. I feel terrible for my guys.
Martin Truex Jr. added.

Martin Truex Jr. is still determined to end the season on high note

The ex-Cup champion isn’t ready to give up over the disappointment. He is determined to not end his final season in the sport without a win as that won’t do anything good to his legacy. Been getting used to swallowing disappointment lately. It sucks. We’ve got seven more races to try to go out on a high note with this team and hopefully win a race — that would be awesome.
Martin Truex Jr. said.

The Toyota driver has seven more races left in the season to score wins. He now also has the responsibility of helping his teammates Denny Hamlin and Chrsitopher Bell, who are already in the conversation for the championship.
