While the race at Watkins Glen focused on Shane van Gisbergen and Chris Buescher battling for the lead-up ahead, a fight brewed a few positions back between Michael McDowell and Zane Smith. Both drivers were in close contention to take another top five finish against their name, which got them having a few run-ins at each other. Subsequently, the 39-year-old was spotted having an animated confrontation with Smith post-race on their fight in the race.

Zane Smith started the race in 19th position while Michael McDowell started in 10th. Though the FRM driver was on course to get a top-10 finish, he aimed for more and wanted to get on top of the podium. On the other hand, the No.71 driver had received a speeding penalty and had to limit the damage caused by the unfortunate incident.

However, with three laps to go, Tyler Reddick and two other drivers had a massive crash causing a late-race caution after William Byron’s crash. This caused another overtime restart which gave the SM driver a chance to get inside the top five.

With determination in both driver’s eyes to retain their position, they indulged in a series of attacks where Smith emerged victorious. This did not go well with the senior driver, as he was later spotted having a heated confrontation with the No.71 driver regarding their close contact racing.
