2022 Daytona 500 champion Austin Cindric expects a ‘desperate’ race at Talladega from fellow competitors

Austin Cindric wins the 2022 Daytona 500

Austin Cindric was expected to be the revelation of the 2022 season after he became the first official race winner in the Next-Gen cars by winning the iconic Daytona 500, edging Bubba Wallace. But the Team Penske Racer couldn’t keep up with the expectations as he fells into midfield obscurity.

He was able to secure only a solo Top 10 finish coming at COTA and came close to another Top 10 at Martinsville with a P11 finish. But other than that it has been a battle for midfield positions for the rookie and he will be hoping to amend that as NASCAR hit the Talladega Superspeedway this Sunday.

Now Austin Cindric has come forth suggesting that the Talladega race will be a desperate one for many drivers and as he expects a different offset there compared to Daytona.

Austin Cindric said that there are a number of drivers on the grid really wanting to win a race as it can provide them a playoff spot. He went on to say that he believes the Talladega race is going to be a desperate one for drivers who are aiming for the playoff spots. Austin Cindric went on to suggest that Talladega has different offsets than Daytona, which usually doesn’t come into play as much.

There’s a lot of guys in the field that really want one win because they see that as their only way to make it in the playoffs. We’ve only got one guy with multiple wins (William Byron), so from that standpoint, I would see this being maybe a desperate race already with business picking up in the win column,” Austin Cindric said.

I definitely look at that as far as a mentality standpoint from my competitors, even in some stages for myself. Obviously, everybody’s got their own motivations to win the race, but I look at it as Talladega certainly has different and handling offsets than Daytona usually doesn’t come into play as much,” Austin Cindric added.

Austin Cindric went on to say that he is looking forward to building upon what he learned from Daytona as he finds them in a position with a lot of strengths when it comes to Superspeedways. He added that everyone has the same chance of having a go at the race but added that it will be interesting to see which team has put in more effort when it comes to learning from the past race.

“I’m looking forward to building off what I learned at Daytona. We obviously had a lot of strengths and try to build on that. Car-wise, I’m interested to see where we qualify and what gains we were able to make just from having the cars longer. I think everyone is kind of in that same boat, so it’ll be interesting to see who has done more homework after the first event of the year,” says Austin Cindric.
