Consistency has paid off for the No:48 Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman as he sits on top of the championship table for the first time in the Cup series. Bowman has secured top 10 finishes in all races of the season, with his best finish coming at Las Vegas. He remains winless, while his teammate William Byron has secured back-to-back victory lane visits.

Bowman had a poor 2022 season where he was able to secure just one win and as struggling to be a contender for race wins thought out. He got eliminated from the playoff in round one itself after being side-lined due to concussion-like symptoms suffered at Texas. He only made his return to the race in the season finale.

He earned the championship tabletop position with his consistency and is elated with the impressive form. Bowman said, “We have the points lead, which is super cool. That’s the first time in my career. I am excited for the team. It is good to get the guys a solid top 10 and move on to Atlanta (Motor Speedway) next week,”.

Jeff Gordan, the HMS VC, is pleased to see the driver’s performance. He is also happy to see Blake Harris, his new crew chief getting along really well. He said, “To see them click as early as they have. I think one of the reasons why that worked was because of the confidence both Alex had in Blake and Blake had in Alex. It’s nice to see that’s paying off for them on the racetrack,”.

2023 might be the year when fans will finally get the answer for the Byron Vs. Bowman debate

Hendrick Motorsports has been one of the most dominant teams in the Cup garage for decades, and only the best of the best gets a shot with the team. The sheer quality of the driver’s line-up makes it impossible for the team to establish a driver hierarchy.  In the current line-up, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson are the big dogs. That leaves one of William Byron and Alex Bowman to be the No:4 driver.

Both of them drive the most iconic cars of the teams and the history of the sport. Byron drives the No:24 car once driven by 4 times champion Jeff Gordan. Bowman drives the No:48 car once driven by 7 times champion Jimmie Johnson. Driving these cars comes with a big responsibility, and both drives are yet to produce worthy of a championship.

With his back-to-back Cup race wins, Byron now has the same number of wins as Bowman, who is the senior driver. Bowman’s consistency sure gives him an edge over his young rival, but when one is driving for a team as big as HMS. The driver who will be able to produce a better output in 2023 will have an edge in the conversation going forward.
