Anthony Alfredo became the first driver in the Xfinity Series history to crash at Sonoma.
Anthony Alfredo's Chevy crashed into the tire barrier
The inaugural Sonoma Xfinity Series race had a wild start on Friday after BJ McLeod Motorsports’s Anthony Alfredo destroyed his car. His No:78 Chevy clobbered the wall, and the team had no choice but to use their backup car for the main race on Saturday.
Alfredo was running in the top 25 midway through the practice session when the incident occurred. The throttle got hung while he was approaching turn one, and according to the driver, it was too late for him to hit the kill switch and get the car to a sudden halt.
The incident might derail the driver’s efforts to return to the winning ways as he has had back-to-back finishes outside the top 20. From 12 races this season, the veteran has secured 6 top 20, and the reaming half were finishes outside the top 20. The stats represent the roller coaster season he had so far in the second tier of NASCAR.
Anthony Alfredo was lucky he got to walk away from the incident unharmed. Noah Gragson, Cup rookie and 2022 Xfinity Series runner-up, is sidelined from racing in Sunday’s main event at Sonoma due to a crash last week at Gateway. He experienced concussion-like symptoms and must now get NASCAR’s medical clearance to race again.
