NASCAR has been on the path of a complete revamp of its races, car, and the individuals associated with racing in an effort to get better race products and attract a brand-new set of fans to the sport. The latest announcement of the Chicago Street Race, which was in the making for the last couple of years, is among the most radical decision it has ever taken as the first-time street race will take place in NASCAR at its 75th anniversary.
The Chicago downtown will host the 2.2 miles, 12-turn race against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and Grant Park next July 2. The race will be one day apart from the IMSA event which will be posted just the day before and will have music and entertainment on offer for the fans. Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue, and South Columbus Drive will all be part of the route, while the start/finish line and pit road will be situated just in front of Buckingham Fountain. It will go into Grant Park and get close to Soldier Field’s northern boundary.
NASCAR senior vice president Ben Kennedy announced the event suggesting that it will be a different celebration of the 75th anniversary of NASCAR racing, saying, “Of all the changes, this is the boldest change in our schedule. We’ve said, and it’s been pretty synonymous when we announced the schedules, that we want to be bold and innovative when we think about new venues and new concepts. This is number one on the list for us right now. It’s certainly going to be the most anticipated event of our season,”.
Bubba Wallace, who was the NASCAR driver’s representative at the event, backed the event as ground-breaking and something that could bring different demography of fans to the sport, saying, “‘Being in this city, bringing NASCAR to this demographic – we talk about how representation matters…You’re gonna get that next Bubba Wallace that’s sitting in the stands like I was when I was 9 years old to be like, ”I want to do this one day. But I want to be better.” And I’m gonna tell ’em, ‘Good luck.”
