Bubba Wallace‘s journey through the NASCAR Cup Series has been a tale of two teams, each with its distinct vibes and experiences. The transition from Richard Petty-owned Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) to 23XI Racing, co-owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, marked a pivotal shift in his career. As Wallace reflects on his path, he shares insights into the massive difference in atmosphere at these two Cup teams.

Wallace’s time at RPM was nothing short of historic. He broke barriers as the first African-American driver in the Cup Series since 2006. His tenure with the iconic team included notable achievements, like a remarkable second-place finish in the Daytona 500 and multiple top-10 finishes. During those years, Wallace honed his skills and made a name for himself, becoming a prominent figure in the sport.

Fast forward to 2021, and Wallace found himself at the doorstep of a new chapter with 23XI. Co-owned by the legendary Michael Jordan, this was a game-changer. His partnership with RPM was a testament to his growth and potential, but the vibe at 23XI was markedly different. He claimed that the camaraderie within the team at 23XI Racing seemed far removed from the atmosphere at RPM. He notes that the team maintains a relaxed environment while adhering to high standards.

It’s very ‘let loose and have fun with each other.’ Everybody in the shop gets along with each other. It’s not a buttoned-up, suit-and-tie environment, which I do not strive in – others may.

Wallace underscores the need for improvement within the 23 teams, aiming to reduce self-inflicted race obstacles. He underscores the importance of arriving well-prepared to capitalize on opportunities and win.

We've got to show up better and show up ready to win.

One of the key aspects contributing to the shift in atmosphere was the continuity and chemistry within the team. Wallace’s close-knit crew, led by veteran crew chief Bootie Barker, remained mostly intact since their first win at Talladega in 2021. This stable and supportive team structure created a unique environment for Wallace to thrive

This weekend, Wallace heads to Martinsville, one of his favorite tracks, with a special paint scheme for the Xfinity 500. The scheme features the selfies of 65 Xfinity Rewards members, adding a personal touch to the race. Wallace has found success at Martinsville, and he holds the track dear to his heart.
