Cal Wells III has been named the Chief executive officer of Legacy Motor Club (LMC). The team officially announced the news through a press release, and the 68-year-old is set to start his new role immediately. The team told Wells’ move to Legacy Motor Club co-owners Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher. Previously, he was a consultant to LMC. Wells was also the former owner of the NASCAR Cup and open-wheel racing team PPI Motorsports.

The current Allegiant Travel Co. chairman and chair of the 2024 Super Bowl LVIII Committee in Las Vegas, Maury Gallagher, believes Wells is a great addition to Legacy Motor Club. The team had already changed this season from the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson partnering with them and the team’s rebranding. And the latest move is Cal Wells’ addition to LMC.

Cal Wells III successfully helped Micheal Waltrip Racing’s restructuring effort as the team’s Chief Operating Officer and Vice President. There is no doubt that he will use his experience to help LMC reach its goals. Wells III told the media, “I am truly honored and excited to be part of Legacy Motor Club. Together, we will build on the strong foundation and accomplishments of the past, while driving forward with renewed focus and collaboration.”

Jimmie Johnson joined the group when it was known as Petty GMS Motorsports in 2022 and has helped rebrand it to Legacy Motor Club. He welcomed Cal Wells III and claimed the team is delighted to have him on their side. Johnson said Wells’ background and his understanding of the industry is impressive. He credited the new Legacy Motor Club CEO for his racing and business knowledge.

Maury Gallagher stated, “Cal’s start with Legacy MC is the start of a new era. With the addition of Cal, we have the right people in place. He has more than 40 years of experience in racing, and his senior management experience will shine through immediately. So the addition of Cal is the ‘icing on the cake’ for us right now.” Hence, it is safe to say Gallagher is confident about their partnership.

Johnson believes Cal Wells is perfect for the role, and under his guidance, they hope to take the organization to the next level. As LMC undergoes manufacturer change, the team will rely on Wells for his expertise. Under his leadership, the team will continue to build the brand. LMC currently fields two full-time NASCAR Cup Series cars for Erik Jones and Noah Gragson. And they have a part-time entry for co-owner Jimmie Johnson.
