“Half-inch wrench,” Clint Bowyer questions Kyle Larson’s racing car knowledge, mocks the HMS driver during the All-Star race broadcast

Kyle Larson has the potential to become one of the greatest drivers of all time, but he isn’t the best when it comes to working on cars according to Clint Bowyer.

Hendrick Motorsports Kyle Larson has established himself as one of the greatest-ever drivers of NASCAR in less than a decade. He was named to the list of 75 Greatest Ever and is expected to become a multi-time champion. While understanding the cars is a major part of success for the driver, according to ex-driver Clint Bowyer, Larson lacks the knowledge to work on cars.

Clint Bowyer, while calling the 2023 All-Star Race from the Fox booth, made the surprising admission. Larson was dominating his rivals after a slow start to the weekend. Bowyer and ex-driver Darrell Waltrip joined veteran commentator Mike Joy. While the other three were parsing how much of a good racer Larson is, Bowyer admitted that he is weak compared to his rivals when working on cars.

Doesn’t care either. Never has. I’ll tell you another funny thing about him. He doesn’t know how to work on anything. It makes me laugh. Like we all grew up working on cars, he grew up racing cars,” Bowyer said. Waltrip interfered and said that Larson is a pretty good driver, “Pretty good at it, I know that,”.

Bowyer, a good friend of Larson, mocked the driver using a toolbox analogy “Half-inch wrench, nah. I think that’s a toolbox over there. I think that’s over there,”. While the commentating trio laughed at Larson, they quickly pointed out that Larson was born for racing. However, he doesn’t have car knowledge like many, and it’s unnecessary for success.

Kyle Larson learned a valuable and rude life lesson from Clint Bowyer

The 2021 Cup Series champion pointed out that though he keeps the conversation short when he has talked with someone in a hurry, he always makes sure to end them properly. He said that Bowyer, on the other hand, just disappears during the conversation.

Typically, if I’m in a hurry and a fan or somebody is wanting to have a full-blown conversation, I’m pretty short with them. I’ll just wrap it up and be like, ‘Alright, I’ll see you later.’ And then they immediately get the hint and close their end of the conversation.  You learn a little bit of that from (Clint) Bowyer. He doesn’t even say, ‘See you later.’ He just disappears. So maybe that’s what I should do,” Larson said.

Larson said that while it’s most often rude to leave conversation mid-way, it is just the ex-SHR driver’s character. The Chevy driver says that it’s the best way to get out of a conversation, but he still says at least a “see you later” before walking off.

You’ll be like mid-conversation with Clint, and he’s just gone. It’s like, ‘I guess we’re over.’ It’s sometimes rude, but it’s just Clint. I feel like that’s the best way to get out of it, but I try to at least just say, ‘Alright, see you later’ and then start walking,” Larson added.
