Former Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the figureheads of NASCAR in the US and around the world. JJ is among the all-time best of the sport, with seven Cup titles to his name, while Dale Jr. is the most popular driver ever to drive in the NASCAR Cup series.

The duo are close friends who still have NASCAR commitments, including top racing teams. Jr owns the top Xfinity Series team, JRM, while Johnson co-owns the Cup series team, Legacy MC. According to Jr., alongside being a proven winner, the current part-time No:84 Chevy Cup driver is pretty good at being unpredictable and keeping secrets.

While talking about Legacy MC signing John Hunter Nemechek to drive the Noi:42 car for them in 2023, Dale Jr. pointed out that JJ didn’t give him a slight hint about the potential move when they talked days before the announcement about many things in a phone call. The two-time Xfinity series champion was surprised about the information as he didn’t see it happening for at least two weeks.

I called Jimmy yesterday morning. Just checking, he and me. And we talked about this a little bit. He didn’t have anything breaking to tell me; he wasn’t going to tell me about the announcement. He didn’t leak it to me or nothing like that. I thought this announcement was like a week or two still away. Talked to him on the phone, and later that day, this comes out. I was like, ‘sly dog!’” Dale Jr. said in the recent episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast.

Mike Davis, the co-host and one of the leaders of Dale Jr.’s Dirty Mo Media, in reply to the former driver’s remarks, pointed out that the last time JJ came to their show after the Cup retirement was less about his future and after just two days he announced his IndyCar entry with Chip Ganassi Racing.

When he was here and didn’t know what he was going to do with his future…a day or two he is announcing that he is going Indy car racing!” said Mike Davis while laughing about the Hall Fame drivers’ previous remarks.

Johnson spent two years in IndyCars driving for Ganassi before returning to Cup series. He is now focused on making LMC a formidable outfit capable of becoming a title challenger in the future. The move to the Toyota garage is one of their first step towards achieving the goal.
