NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. has joined a long line of elite NASCAR personals calling for the return of Rockingham Speedway A.K.A the ‘The Rock.’ Rockingham is looking for the same lifeline the iconic North Wilkesboro Speedway got in 2023 with the All-Star race, which they got for the 2024 season as well.
The two-time Xfinity Series champion raced at the track in both the Cup and the Xfinity Series before it lost its spot in the NASCAR schedule in 2004 when the sport was at its peak. Since opening in 1962, the track has hosted 42 races and was a fan-favorite location for a long time. The board of directors of track has big plans for Raleigh-based land developer Dan Lovenheim.
The JR Motorsports co-owner, responding to the news about the project proposal by track authorities, voiced his support for it. He pointed out that he has seen awesome progress and expressed his hope that it might return to the schedule soon. Dale Jr. loves the track because it is challenging track was for racers.
This is awesome to see progress here. I learned to love what a challenge this track was. Trucks, Xfinity, and even Cup hopefully return someday soon.Dale Jr. posted on X.
What is the $10 million renovation project for The Rock
Rockingham Speedway was granted just short of $10 million as part of the federal American Rescue Plan fund distribution, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board of Commissioners has come up with some suggestions for the Department of Commerce on how to spend the allocated funds.
The track was repaved last season following a $3 million request and a 1 million request was made in October this season for additional facility improvements in the 1.0170-mile track that is now hosting music festivals and other concerts.

A third and final request was made for $4.99 million for another massive renovation project that includes the half-mile short track in the backstretch of the facility called the Little Rock. This amount is planned to be used for improvements of 17 different areas of the track.
