“Hell, our guys were running into each other,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. is frustrated by JRM drivers’ performance against Ty Gibbs in the Xfinity finale

Dale Earnhardt Jr. went into the Xfinity Series season finale at Phoenix, dreaming of the championship he has been chasing since 2018. Three out of four drivers who secured the final spot were his drivers. But they failed to hold off the only non-Chevy driver on the grid Ty Gibbs of JGR.

Ty Gibbs was able to dominate the whole race while the JRM drivers were fighting each other to get the win. Noah Gregson couldn’t close the gap fast enough in the final laps to secure the win for JRM.  Dale Jr. remains frustrated about the missed opportunity, and in the latest episode of his podcast Dale Jr. Download, he expressed his feelings.

The JRM drivers fighting amongst each other instead of Ty Gibbs was frustrating to watch for Dale Jr. He said, “I didn’t want them to back him into the fence or crash him. I damn sure wanted them to run him into the dirt or door him, which none of them ever did. Hell, our guys were running into each other, which was frustrating because they raced”.

The JRM boss acknowledged that though the fight among the teammates was inevitable, they shouldn’t have let Gibbs sneak in. He said, “It was inevitable that our guys would race each other because the seven and the nine were nearly dead equal. And so, as the 54 sneaks away, they bounce off each other a little bit,”.

Dale Jr is also at fault for their championship loss while all the odds were stacked in their favor. Dale instructed his drivers not to be too aggressive on Gibbs as he wanted a clean win. This might have backfired for the team.

I will tell you I talked to my four guys post-Martinsville, and I said, ‘Listen, we’re not dumping nobody this weekend.’ I said, ‘We’re going to try and win that championship. We’re damn sure not going to let that 54 win it, but we’re going to walk out of there with our heads up,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that Ty Gibbs raced smart and clean for the win. He pointed out that people took the comments about not wrecking Ty Gibbs too literally. Dale wanted his drivers to fight aggressively with Gibbs; he didn’t want them to destroy or turn him.

We threw everything at him, and he overcame. He raced clean. He raced smart. I think people took my comments about not wrecking him…Here’s the way I felt about it. I would not have cared one bit if they had doored the hell out of the 54, run him up the track, whatever. I didn’t want them to turn him back into the wall,” Dale Earnhardt explained.
