NBC will take over the NASCAR broadcast from Fox starting from the upcoming Ally 400 race weekend. The first 16 race coverage by Fox hast settled well with NASCAR fans and, unlike in the past 2023, witnessed fans expressing their frustration more via social media. They hope for a change when Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the team take over the race booth from Mike Joy and the team.
One of the major criticisms Fox faced for their NASCAR coverage this season was the supposedly increased number of ad breaks, the poor direction of race broadcast, and fans missing some significant incidents either due to breaks or the camera shifting the focus to some other incidents on the track. This is mainly because of the lack of control the race booth has over the producers and broadcast.
While discussing what he loves about working with NBC, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jr. said he gets more freedom while calling races on NBC. The producers trust him and his crew while calling races and follow their lead regarding streaming battles on the track. Dale Jr. pointed out that calling the race while looking at the screen that shows what the producers select is pretty boring.
“I love working for NBC because all of the booth talent can say, ‘Hey, the battle for seventh is about to happen. The eighth-place car is catching him, he’s running him down’ and the cameras will go there. They will trust us and take us to where we want to go,” Dale Jr. said.
“I really love that about my job. If I had to sit there and basically just talk about what was on the screen, that’d be frustrating, because I want to take you where I think the battles are. But if somebody was choosing what I was seeing and I had to narrate that, that would not be any fun,” Dale Jr added.
Dale Jr. enjoys not having a playbook for his analyst role
The JRM co-owner will mark his sixth year as an NBC race pundit in 2023. One of the many things Jr. enjoys with his co-hosts is the opportunity he gets to express himself and call races the best he can.
“It’s a fun job, man. But there’s no playbook. There’s no guidelines or hey, here’s what you need to do. You just gotta either prepare, do the work, or you’re not gonna be ready and you’re not gonna have all the information you need in those moments when the race is happening,” Dale Jr. said.
