Dale Jarrett is a former American professional stock racing driver. Currently, he works with NBC as a NASCAR commentator. He won the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship in 1999 and is well known for his victory in Daytona 500. Jarrett won the event thrice in 1993, 1996, and 2000. His father, Ned Jarett, was a 2 time Grand National champion. Glenn Jarett, his older brother, was also a race car driver.

Jarett began his career in 1977. He participated in his first professional race at Hickory in the Limited Sportsman division. He started last and finished ninth. This event was important in his career as he realized he wanted to race for a living. In 1982 he competed in NASCAR Budweiser Late Model  Sportsman Series. He finished sixth overall at the end of the season.

In 1992 he drove the No.18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet for the Joe Gibbs Racing team. In 1993 he won the Daytona 500, his only win that year. Next season he won the Mello Yello 500 but left JGR at the end of the season. He signed to drive for Robert Yates in 1995. He had four Busch Series win. In 1996, he won the Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400, and Daytona 500. He won 7 races in 1997, making it his best season.

In 1999, Jarett won the Pontiac Excitement 400 and the Winston Cup. He then retired from the Busch Series and became a part-time owner of a Busch Series team. He won the Daytona 500 in 2000. In 2001 he suffered a severe concussion after crashing at Kansas Speedway. In 2005 there was another crash. He won his final Cup Series at Alabama’s Talladega Super Speedway. In 2006, he had 4 top 10’s. He left Robert Yates and joined Michael Waltrip Racing, a new Toyota team. In May 2008, he had his final run in the All-Star race. He retired after that and became an announcer for NASCAR coverage.
