Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin has made handwaves in the NASCAR community with his Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s backed podcast “Action Detrimental.” The 23XI Racing co-owner is one of the most vocal drivers on any issues associated with the sport, and the new podcast gave him a platform where he could share more of such ideas with a wider audience with fewer constraints. He has shared thought-provoking ideas that could fix the rating issue the sport facing right now.

He pointed out that the summer weeks are the most favorable time for NASCAR as it has limited competition. So, he proposes a bracket challenge or in-season competition. Denny Hamlin claims that his idea to hold a head-to-head driver challenge for five weeks in the summer could produce more competitive and challenging racing while giving the front runners and back markers equal opportunity to shine. He predicts a tenfold return on investment to the investment for NASCAR.

I do think that during the summer months, we should be kicking ass in the ratings; we should be there. We’re just competing against, uh, baseball, for the most part, maybe some big PGA events when they come up.  I gotta fix five-week, where we are going to have more storylines than ever.  The drivers are going to get amped up. This is it. This will be a game changer, and in the investment, NASCAR…will get a tenfold in return,” Denny Hamlin said.

He also suggested that there should be a three-million-dollar prize money for the winner. Hamlin said, “I think that there should be a monetary win of three million dollars for the winner.  I know that seems like a lot, but the return on investment trust me, would be tenfold for NASCAR. From the publicity, they would get how much content would be created on two drivers head-to-head,”.

Explained: The Million-dollar Denny Hamlin Fix for NASCAR

NASCAR @
NASCAR 2023 Richmond Cup race

Hamlin wants to hold an in-season tournament for the $3 Million where 3 top 32 drivers in the championship point table after the first ten races go head-to-head, similar to the Xfinity Series Dash for Cash. The tournament will last five weeks in raw or selected venues as decided by the sanctioning body.

So on the first day of the challenge, the No:32 driver will be challenging the No:1 ranked, No:2, the No:31, and so on. The driver who finishes the highest among the two will qualify for the Round of 16. The challenge continues in the same pattern until the fight is between two drivers on the final day, where the winner goes home with $3 Mil and the loser empty-handed.

Hamlin pointed out that in the head to have challenges; the fight is not just about money; it will be about their pride and ego. None will want to lose against the other, and it will produce some interesting content and storyline for fans and media to follow. There will also be many upsets and underdog stories, and this is another big incentive the smaller teams can fight for.

I can tell you, as the drivers are concerned, we would be wildly competitive for this. The reason is there’s a big prize at the end, but not only that but our egos you won’t like to lose. This is an in-season tournament; we have them in basketball, we have them in, you know, even I think NFL or football is talking about doing something like this or having some sort of bracket challenge right? “ Hamlin said.

I really think that we could. This would create so many storylines, and you would have no idea how much the teams would change their strategies in the middle of the race to beat whomever they’re up against that given week to move on to the next round so many opportunities for storylines here,” Hamlin added.
