NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan entered NASCAR with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin in 2021 with 23XI Racing. Over the last three years the Toyota team has established themselves as one of the most exciting and fastest growing sides. They recently have also opened their multi-million worth mega race-shop, Airspeed with the hopes becoming a championship contending team by 2025.
Recently Denny Hamlin was asked about whether he would ever drive for 23XI Racing and potentially become teammate of Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick. The three times Daytona 500 winner is open to race full-time for his own team but there is one condition. He would only move to 23XI if their cars are on the same level as his JGR Camrys and is capable of fighting for championships.
I’m slowly but surely starting to believe that 23XI is an equal to the position I’m in right now.Denny Hamlin said in an interview with Sports Business Journal.
The Bristol race winner seemed skeptical about making the move to 23XI. Although he reckoned that his team is slowly getting up to speed and could be at pace with the JGRs. This upward trend in performance could indeed attract Hamlin away from his previous alliance and a new partnership of owner-team could be witnessed on the field. But at the end of the day the move more likely won’t happen has he has confirmed many times in the past that he wants to retire at JGR.
Denny Hamlin lashed out at NASCAR CEO
Since the origination of the team, Hamlin and Michael Jordan are speculated to have invested tens of millions of dollars in the team. However, with the recent revenue dispute going on between the teams and NASCAR, it is unclear how will this affect the series in the long run.
Because you’re somewhat placing a bet that NASCAR’s not going to blow this whole thing up and make awful decisions that would negatively impact our future as a team or their future as NASCAR. Everything is just kind of hanging on waiting to see what Jim [France, NASCAR CEO] decides to do.Denny Hamlin
Hamlin reckons that he cannot invest more money in the team due to the ongoing disputes. Moreover, his confidence has been razor thin with Jim France‘s recent decisions, and suspects everything could blow off in a matter of seconds if the right decisions are not made.
