Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin has called out Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar for his over-aggressive driving at the last two Cup Series races, especially this week at Martinsville. Hocevar is driving for Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club, replacing Noah Gragson, who left the team with insensitive social media activity.
Hocevar, who is one of the primary contenders to win the Truck Series championship this season, has already signed a deal to drive for Spire Motorsports in the Cup series, replacing Ty Dillon. His impressive outing with Legacy MC helped him land the Cup deal. He showed impressive maturity for the driver, who was being scrutinized for his aggression at the start of the season.
But due to some reason, he has been showing signs of the old Hocevar in his last two outings in the Cup Series in the No:42 car. Hamlin wasn’t the his on-track antics. He didn’t mince his words about the driver, considering his JGR rookie teammate Ty Gibbs was wrecked during the race by Hocevar. Hamlin wasn’t also a fan of the youngsters racing cars that lapped him.
I just said last week, I was singing his praises about what he was doing in the Truck Series, but I’ve now seen consecutive weeks in Cup, where he’s driving like an idiot. I come up to lap him, and he’s running into people. He’s pinching people down. I don’t know what he’s doing. He’s got his ride for next year. What is he — you’re just pissing people off for no reason.
Hamlin said, as reported by On3.com.
Denny Hamlin highlights Dale Earnhardt Jr. criticizing Carson Hocevar
Hamlin highlighted NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was calling the race in the NBC booth, called out the Legacy MC during the event. He also defended Gibbs if he made any aggressive move on Hocevar, as he was on the lead lap.
They just don’t get it. Carson is a head-scratcher for me because, and I appreciate Dale Jr. on the broadcast, calling him out again. Saying, ‘Do this in the Cup Series. Go ahead. It’s a bad choice.’…Ty might’ve knocked him up the race track because he’s on the f—ing lead lap. You’re two laps down. Get out of the way.
The criticism coming back is not a good look on the youngster, considering his impressive progress this year. Hocevar needs to fix the issues and be the better version of himself on the track. His Cup driver might not tolerate such an aggressive style next year, marking his rookie season.
