Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin is arguably one of the most illustrious circle of friends among his fellow NASCAR drivers. One of his closest friends is none other than basketball GOAT Michael Jordan. The duo has been close for over a decade and is now a business partner. They co-own the Cup series team 23XI Racing.
In the recently released NASCAR docu-series NASCAR: Full Speed, Denny Hamlin’s father, Dennis, detailed a story featuring Jordan and his gift to him. The NBA champion gave Dennis Hamlin a Cigar with a letter. Jordan wants Hamlin Sr. to smoke that cigar when the JGR star finally wins a championship.
Him and Michael Jordan are good friends, and now they’re partners. So, he pulls up in his Lamborghini, and he reaches down in his side door, pulls out this cigar. Michael Jordan signed it for me and wrote a little letter (that) says, ‘Break it when we in the championship.’ I’m supposed to break that and smoke that cigar. That’s what I’m going to do.

Hamlin is the most successful driver not to win the titles in the NASCAR Cup Series. He has won 51 races in his Cup career, including three Daytona 500s and multiple crown jewel races. But his charge towards the title often ends prematurely. 2023 was one of the best examples, as it saw him dominate until the R-8, only to have an inconsistent R-8 and finish P5 in the championship table yet again.
Denny Hamlin really likes his portrayal by Netflix in the docu-series
Hamlin was one of the stars in the Netflix docu-series that is now in the top 5 charts in the US and Canada. His willingness to open himself up and let Netflix come into his house and have interviews with his family made him one of the main guys in the series.
Hamlin was initially concerned about how he would be portrayed in the series as Netflix had full control over the editing of the captured footage. But after seeing the series, he admitted that he is happy about how accurately they were able to portray him in the series.
Certainly, I feel like it portrays me correctly. You really kind of worry at times when you don’t have editing rights, you don’t have any of that. I loved it. This is Netflix’s project. They got to do whatever they wanted to do with it. I thought that my, what I am on the racetrack, what I am off the racetrack, was portrayed correctly.Hamlin said, as reported by On3.com.
