The Next-Gen cars will make their on-track debut at New Hampshire Motor Speedway during the Ambetter 301, the 20th round of the Cup event this season. The 1.058-mile Cup race will definitely be one of the drivers’ most intense outings because the rivalry for playoff slots and the regular season championship is heating up.

Erick Jones, who drives the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Petty GMS Motorsports, finished P4 last weekend in Atlanta after making one of his closest attempts to win in a long time. The 28-year-old has so far earned six Top 10 finishes, but he has been unable to match his performance from a year ago given that his winless streak has lasted through 105 rounds of the cup competition.

Going into this weekend’s race in the wake of Petty GMs announcing the exit of Ty Dillon from the team at the end of this season Erick Jones will be hoping to convert his P4 finish momentum from the Atlanta race to a good finish in Ambetter 301 as a continuous good run will be essential for him to make t to the playoff though it’s a longshot.

Erick Jones acknowledges that he expects the NHMS race to be tough and hard to make passes during the race just like what it had been in  Gateway three weekends ago. He added that though the PJ1 will be helpful it will be tough to make passes and pointed out that the car demands a lot of work in the short tracks.

I think New Hampshire will be tough. Gateway was a tough one to pass on and think it’s going to be a little bit similar to that. I think the PJ1 will help some with it, but I think it’s going to be a tough race to pass. I think we all know there’s a little work to do with the car short track and road course-wise to get it better,” Eric Jones said.

Erick Jones went on to say that there are things that need to be got right at the short tracks, which requires testing and making sure what is better. He suggested that it is going to be tough for a little longer until all the setup of the car gets right and put the pieces in the right position to make the car happy on the short track.

There are things in the works, but it’s just a matter of getting the pieces built, getting them tested, seeing what’s better, seeing what works, so l thinks it’s going to be tough for a little while longer until we get those pieces are built for these cars and figure out what makes them happy on the short,” Erick Jones added.

Erick Jones went on to say that it will be important to hold on to track position on Sunday’s race as it will be a costlier affair for the drivers to get it back once it’s lost. He added that this makes the New Hampshire race a frustrating affair as he hopes to see drivers fighting hard to chase down the front runners only to get frustrated in doing so if they failed.

You want to keep that track position for yourself because you know you’re not going to get it back or it’s going to be really hard to get back. So, that frustration just rises quickly, and it won’t be any different in New Hampshire. I think you’ll see the same kind of thing with guys catching people, not being able to get by them, and getting frustrated,” says Eric Jones.

Erick Jones went on to add that he isn’t sure about the number of wrecks that are going to happen in the race but finds it an interesting situation as drivers will be going nuts on restarts. He suggested that since the restart is the major time for drivers to get a sudden move upfront it will be an aggressive affair that might force that can end up in a big wreck.

I don’t know if you’ll see as many wrecks, maybe, it’ll be interesting. Too, on the restart, guys are just going nuts. It’s the only time you really feel like you can gain spots, pick up a lot of spots and so you’re making big aggressive moves and obviously, with that, you are putting yourself at risk to make a mistake and get into a wreck. That’s kind of what we’ve seen so far,” added Eric Jones.
