WATCH: “Even when JRM wins they lose”- Fans react as Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s driver miserably fails to complete a burnout after winning at Road America
Sam Mayer secured his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory on his home track in Road America 180.
Sam Mayer, a 20-year-old Wisconsin native, secured his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at his home race, Road America. As a teenager, he moved from his native to North Carolina to fulfill his racing dream with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team JR Motorsports. Mayer overtook Parker Kligerman and got the lead in Turn 14 at Road America. It was right before the final lap of double overtime in the race.
Sam Mayer held his position and won his first Xfinity race by 0.368 seconds. It was his first win in 71 starts in the Series, and he finally secured it. After Justin Allgaier, his JR Motorsports teammate, went wide and out of track on the second overtime restart, Mayer had a chance to win and took it. It was a chaotic end to the race as Sage Karam took the lead and was passed by Kilgerman. Mayer then overtook him and won the race.
After his win, Mayer told the media, “Oh my God, I can’t believe it. We had it there, then lost it for a second, and then all hell broke loose there at the end. It’s so special to get that first win and get that monkey off your back. It feels so good.” While Sam Mayer capitalized on overtime at Road America, he failed to complete a burnout after his win. The NASCAR fans had the best reaction to this.
