After a late restart in the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen International, JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer spun his rival and race leader Ty Gibbs. Though it looked like the Joe Gibbs Racing driver would win the race after leading 70 of the 86 laps, a late restart delivered an unexpected result. Due to two cautions, there was an overtime restart.

Sam Mayer tagged Ty Gibbs, which sent him spinning and claimed his second victory in the series. However, after the race, the No.1 Chevrolet Camaro driver confessed that it was an accident. He said he wheel-hoped it and that it was unfortunate. Mayer revealed he did not want to take out any car. Although, this is not the first incident between the two drivers. This incident at Sunoco Go Rewards 200 At The Glen made headlines because of their previous altercations.

Sam Mayer told the media, “I wheel-hopped it. That’s unfortunate. I feel bad for doing that. Obviously, you don’t want to take out a Gibbs car like that – or any car like that. … That’s an accident. But I think everyone can agree that it’s ok for an Xfinity Series regular to win this race.” NASCAR fans reacted to the incident by picking sides.

“Revenge never felt so sweet,” was one comment. In 2022, a fight broke out between Sam Mayer and Ty Gibbs in the NASCAR Xfinity race at Martinsville Speedway. It ended with Gibbs punching Mayer multiple times, and it looks like the fans haven’t forgotten the incident. “Ty’s had it coming from Sam for a long time coming. Eventually, he’s gonna get raced how he’s raced people,” was another comment.

During the physical altercation between the two drivers last season, Ty Gibbs wore his helmet while punching Sam Mayer. Hence a fan commented, “Make sure Ty takes his helmet off first this time.” “Deserved after Martinsville last year,” and “Sam Mayer is a savage. He gained my respect. You have to prove you deserve respect, and he did. Ty had that coming” were two comments. Take a look at more below.

After the Watkins Glen race, Gibbs spoke about the incident and stated that when they race out of desperation, they wheel-hop and take out the leader. He said it can be called a racing move. However, Ty Gibbs took a dig at his arch-rival by congratulating him for his second win and stating he wished he would have got his 13th win.
