‘I seem to always just crash myself,’ Kyle Larson opens up about his Superspeedway form ahead of the Talladega Cup Race

The superspeedways are one of the most challenging and entertaining tracks in the NASCAR schedule even for a driver like Kyle Larson, who dominated the 2021 season to win his maiden cup Series championship. The Hendrick Motorsport started the 2022 season at Daytona 500 at pole position only to finish at P32 leading a single lap.

Kyle Larson’s experience in superspeedways always has been less impressive as since his rookie season in 2014 he had 16 Daytona outings in which he finished inside the top 10 five times and failed to finish the race 7 times. When it comes to Talladega where he will come out to race this Sunday, he had 2 top 10 finishes and 5 DNF in its 14 starts.

Kyle Larson’s inability to perform in the superspeedways is more evident when we consider the fact, that he has only led 13 of the 2590 laps he raced there and now the defending champion has come forth acknowledging his inability to perform in Superspeedways ahead of Sunday’s GEICO 500.

Kyle Larson said that he enters into every Superspeedway race different game but eventually most of the time it ends in him crashing out. He went on to say that nothing seems to work out for him in cup races and acknowledged that the drivers who are the frontrunners in the banked ovals are the ones who figured out the secret to succeeding there.

For whatever reason, I don’t know. We talked about that this week in our team meeting. I come here with different game plans every time and I seem to always just crash myself or be right in the middle of a crash,” Kyle Larson said.

“I’ve tried a bunch of different ways, and nothing’s seemed to work out to this point. I don’t know what the right way to race these things is, but there’s definitely a handful of guys who always contend up front, so they got it figured out,” Kyle Larson added.

Kyle Larson went on to say that it gets frustrating for him sometimes to come out from such races with disappointing results after putting in huge efforts. He added that though he has gotten better in these tracks luck always constrained him and added that maybe he is not confutable with racing in Superspeedways.

It does get frustrating because when you put the effort in, you want to see results and maybe I have gotten better at these places but just circumstance of getting lucky and missing wrecks and stuff I haven’t done a good enough job [of]. But it’s just a totally different style of racing and one I guess I’m not comfortable with,” says Kyle Larson.
