Jimmie Johnson is one of the most accomplished and respected stock car racers of his generation and maybe one of the greats of all time, an opinion which is debatable,  made his childhood dream of driving the IndyCar around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway comes to life last Sunday. The seven times NASCAR Cup champions for Hendrick Motorsports had a below-par outing in Brickyard.

Jimmie Johnson in his maiden Indy 500 was among the fastest on the track in all the practice runs but he was only able to secure a P12 after the qualifiers. When the veteran finds himself running in the pack with heavy traffic he had to take up a cautious approach which meant him losing some spots in the first few alps itself.  He was down to P16 in the early laps and wasn’t able to figure ways to go forth and get into a respectful finish.

The No:48 Honda crashed into the wall on Turn with just five alps left on the race which secured him a P28 finish as the final results came out. Now Jimmie Johnson has come forth expressing his opinion on how the whole race week played out for him and how much he enjoyed the debut race at the Brickyard.

Jimmie Johnson acknowledged that the Indy 500 experience was amazing for him and said that he is so thankful to have had the opportunity. He went on to say that he wish he had performed better in the race and had a better result but at the end of the day it’s racing. He went on to say he will be a lot smarter when he comes back to race here next time.

The experience was amazing. I’m so thankful to have had this opportunity. I wish I had performed better in the race and had a better result, but that’s racing. I learned a ton. If I have a chance to come back and do it again, I’ll be a lot smarter when I come back,” Jimmie Johnson said.

Jimmie Johnson went on to say that he feel like track position was his biggest issue as he was a little cautious at the start of the race which made him lose a couple of positions. He added that at the end having the caution flag coming out when it did he was unable to recover from the back and go forward. He acknowledged that he simply couldn’t figure out how to pass cars and get around or pass anybody at the race.

I really feel like track position was my biggest issue. I was a little cautious at the start of the race and lost a couple of positions. Ultimately, the caution flag coming out when it did and putting us at the tail end of the field, I couldn’t recover from that,” Jimmie Johnson added.

I simply could not figure out how to pass cars and get around anybody,” says Jimmie Johnson.
