Ty Gibbs has just made a whole lot of haters at Martinsville. The Joe Gibbs Racing rookie took out his teammate, ruining his chances of winning the Xfinity playoff race. The No:54 wrecked No:19 Brandon Jones, who desperately needed a win to qualify for the championship 4 race. Gibbs already had the finale spot secured.
The incident took place in the final restart, with just two laps remaining. Gibbs was at front in the final restart, with Noah Gregson on the outside and Jones behind him. Just before the end of the first lap, the No:19 took the lead by overtaking Gibbs though the inside. Gibbs then wrecked Jones from the inside on the first corner and took home the win.
The JGR driver was welcomed with booes from the fans. The majority of the NASCAR community is frustrated with Gibbs’s actions. Some even took the opportunity to point out that the immature and reckless behavior of Gibbs will come to bite JGR in the future. The youngster is the Grandson of JGR owner Joe Gibbs.
In his post-race interview, Ty insisted that his move was clean and not ill-intentional. He said, “It was definitely not a neat move, for sure. I didn’t want to wreck him,”. Brandon Jones feels disrespected as a teammate and even their rivals from JRM agree with the TRD driver.
How NASCAR Twitter reacted to Ty Gibbs’s actions
Other than a few odd comments, NASCAR fans went wild with their criticism of the youngster’s actions. They demanded NASCAR to suspend him. They agreed that Gibbs didn’t deserve the win.
No written rule says you shouldn’t move ones teammate to win the race. But the situation is a matter of respect. Gibbs cost JGR a spot in the season finale that could have given them a better shot at the championship. He was selfish and immature to wreck Jones for the win.
