2021 Cup Series champion Kyle Larson has come forth demanding NASCAR to review the decision to hold Cup races on temporary dirt tracks or in any dirt tracks. The Hendrick Motorsports driver, among the most successful dirt racer to make it to the Cup series, was talking ahead of the Bristol Cup race, where he started on the pole and crashed out.

Larson pointed out that he enjoys racing on the concrete surface at Bristol, and as he has observed, the second race of the regular season, which is on concrete, attracts more fans than the race held on a temporary dirt track. He said he would be pleased to run both races on the original surface.

I think we all really enjoy the concrete surface here at Bristol. I think the crowd’s typically bigger – it seems like at this point now for the concrete stuff. I don’t know. It’s up to the series and the promoters, but I would love to get back to running two races on the concrete here,” Larson said.

Kyle Larson was asked if he wanted other tracks to replace Bristol as a temporary dirt surface. He said,  “None,” and claimed, “We don’t need to be racing on dirt,”.  He then went on to point out, quoting Richard Petty, that dirt races take the sport backward. Larson said, “Cut the cord. As Richard Petty says, dirt takes our sport backward,” he said.

The No:5 Chev Camaro ZL1 team started the race on the pole and was among the cars with guaranteed top-5 finishing capability if not a win. But a crash involving Ryan Preece of Stewart Hass Racing ended his day. Preece took out Larson on Lap 175 while retaliating for an early race tussle during the No:5s run to stage 1 win on Lap 75. Though Larson was disappointed by the result, he said he had moved on from the incident as there was no point in confronting him for the incident.

Yeah, I’m guessing he was paying me back for whatever I did earlier. He ran me straight into the fence, and my car was broke, and we crashed. It sucks, but I should just be mad at myself for spinning out earlier and putting myself back there. Just sucks,” Kyle Larson said about the incident.
