The 2024 NASCAR Cup season will mark seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson’s Toyota debut. He will race in the season opener, the Daytona 500, in the TRD Camary with his team, Legacy Motor Club. The Hall of Famer is set to race nine races including the Daytona event and the Brickyard 400 in the upcoming season.
Many expected Johnson to race in the second edition of the Chicago Street race, which has recently agreed on a new deal after NASCAR promised an additional $2 million payment. He was scheduled to race in the inaugural race in 2023, and it was one of the events he was looking forward to. But he had to withdraw his entry following the murder-suicide of his in-laws. He won’t be racing in 2024 at the event because of family reasons.
Johnson pointed out that he has plans with his family in July that can’t be compromised and will not race at the event. It’s important that Johnson now spend more time with his family after a two-decade-long racing career, in which he had very limited time to invest between racing and family. It would be a big miss for the fans as well as NASCAR.
Chicago was certainly on the list, but trying to manage personal business and racing. I hope to be traveling with my family in July, and wanted to leave that window of time open.Johnson said, as reported by On3.com.
Jimmie Johnson won’t race in the All-Star event as well
Johnson also confirmed that he will not be racing in the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race. He has never raced on the iconic track in his career, and it would’ve been a great place for him to race in 2024. But his partners don’t see it that way. Hence, the decision not to race was made.
I’ve considered it. Unfortunately, it hasn’t come through our orbit, in a sense relative to partners. But that’s one of the few tracks on the schedule I have not driven on.
While he isn’t planning to run in these two events, Johnson confirmed that he is interested in racing in one more event this season. He pointed out that he has a ten-race window this season, and we hinted that he will p[probably add a race to his maiden year with Toyota.
