Kyle Larson has admitted that he isn’t the biggest fan of superspeedway racing, which is defined by chaos. The two miles or more oval tracks are known for highspeed racing, where anyone can win a race with a solid car with some luck. It’s a game of survival more than just a pure test of skill, thus making it a debatable event.
Following the high-speed crash of Ryan Preece on the 2023 regular-season finale at Daytona, the 2021 NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Larson’s better half, wife Katelyn Sweet, took it to X (previously Twitter) to share her dislike of such events. She posted, “Could be unpopular. But I hate this racing. I am so glad that Ryan was able to get out of his car after that wreck.”
Now, ahead of the Bristol playoff race, answering the same question, the No:5 Hendrick Motorsports driver admitted that he has similar feelings about racing in Superspeedways. Larson pointed out that there was nothing he could do as NASCAR is adding more such tracks to the schedule but added that the safety aspect is making big progress as well.
“There’s nothing you can do…I hate the racing, too. It’s on the schedule, and they keep adding more of them, it seems. It is what it is. But you just hope they continue to make the sport safer, which they have…It is what it is. But you just hope they continue to make the sport safer, which they have,” he told Speed Freaks.

The former champion pointed out that though NASCAR has made significant improvements over the years in terms of safety, there is room to do more. Paving the insides is one thing he sees as a priority, as it can stop the barrel roles such as Daytona from repeating.
He insisted that if the grass wasn’t present, the accident couldn’t have been that violent. Larson also gave NASCAR the credit that’s due as the driver was able to walk away from the crash with close to zero injuries.
“The cars have come a long way from the last decade, and there’s always room to improve, so I think looking forward, they can look at paving the insides of the racetrack because that wreck would’ve never happened if there was some grass there. There’s a lot to be proud of that he was able to walk away from that wreck,” Larson said.
