Joe Gibbs Racing’s veteran driver, Denny Hamlin, is arguably the greatest NASCAR driver ever not to win a Cup title. He and legendary driver Mark Martin are two of the greatest of the sport that has never won the title but sit on a pedestal much higher than some Cup winners. Hamlin, with two wins and a P2 finish in the regular season championship, is poised for another chase for the title in 2023.

Former NASCAR driver and NBC sports analyst Kyle Petty doesn’t see Hamlin winning his maiden title this seaosn if his team doesn’t fix the pit-lane mishaps. Petty believes it is the Achilles Heel of the future Hall of Fame entrant. Even in the regular seaosn finale at Daytona, lack of clan pit-stop was an issue for him.

Richard Petty’s son went on to claim that if Hamlin can have a clean pitstop without any penalties for speeding or mishaps, he has the skills and car to win the championship by a landslide. The pit-stop issue is not limited to the No:11 Toyota Camry driver. Unfortunately, his Cup team, 23XI Racing, also suffers from pit-stop mistakes.

We see Denny Hamlin, I have all the faith in the world. He is a Hall of Famer, he’s a great race car driver. But once again, his Achilles Heel – Pit Road, raises its head yesterday at Daytona. If he can have clean Pit Road, no penalties, no bad pit stops, and stuff like, Denny Hamlin may lap the field and win this championship by a landslide. But he’s got to get some of that,” Kyle Petty told NBC.

JGR owner Joe Gibbs has recently given an update on the No:11 driver’s future with his team. He pointed out that he wants the veteran to stay on the team as he helped the team to be where they are now over the last 17 years. He wants Hamlin to end his career here, and a contract extension is on the horizon.

We want Denny here. It’s been 17 years. He’s helped us build our race team along with all those other guys that have helped us over the years from the driver’s standpoint. But we would love for him to be here and go his entire career and retire here. That’s kind of our dream. That’s what we’d like,” Joe Gibbs said.
